The Algarve comprises one of the most important tourist areas of the Country. One of the main and principal attractions is its climate. This diversity can be found in the three main areas which divide the region: coast, inland and mountains.

The coast area concentrates the majority of the economic activity of the region. The rugged inland is an area of transition between the coast and the mountains, made up of calcareous and slate clay rocks. Also known as mountain edge, this region is, traditionally, the main supplier of agricultural produce in the Algarve.

The mountains, which occupies 50 per cent of the territory, is formed mainly by slate clay rocks and some granite ones. The most important mountain ridges are Serra de Espinhaço de Cão, Serra de Monchique and Serra do Caldeirão.

The tourism, based on the sun and sea products, is the main economic activity of the Algarve region.  With such an appealing climate, and a significant improvement of the day to day living conditions of the population, over the last decade, the Algarve is the only area in Portugal, together with the large urban areas of Lisbon and Porto, to register a growth in the population.

Another one of its economic activities is the agriculture. With a significant weight in the local economy, the Algarve produces dried fruits (figs, almonds and carob beans), the famous fire water (medronho), and also the cork production, mainly in the north-east region of the Algarve. It is also known for the production of cork and citrus fruit.

The fishing industry, mainly due to the development of various fish factories, had an important role in the economy of the Algarve during the time of the New State. At the present moment, the artificial reefs of aquaculture and the reopening of the  fish canning industry, has given a new life to this economic activity,

The gastronomy also constitutes an important economic factor for the region. Apart from the grilled fish, there are other typical dishes, such as: razor shellfish rice, from Faro area, grilled sardines from Portimão area, the “Dom Rodrigos” cakes from Lagos area, and the cured pork sausages from the Algarve mountains.
